Great post. True doughnut connoisseurs came to Donut Fest last weekend and voted. The greatest shop you never heard of won Crowd Favorite two years in a row: D&D’s Place. THE BEST GLAZED DOUGHNUT IN CHICAGO. According to a few articles on this little-known shop, the owner was trained by the 80+ year-old owner of Old Fashioned Donuts. 8324 S Kedzie, Chicago. I’ve been following dndsdonuts on Instagram, and it has received a lot of attention from donut purists lately. This place truly has the best raised dough I’ve ever had. They also have the biggest apple fritter in Chicago.
As for the better known shops, my top all-around pick while in downtown is Firecakes.
Other thoughts: Do-Rite is 2nd Doughnut Vault and Dat Donuts are overrated Stan’s is extremely overrated. I swear they’ve changed their recipe since getting purchased by Labriola. Dat hasn’t been as good for about 5 years. Old Fashioned is good, but dangerous area. Abundance is very underrated and among the best in Chicago, but also in a seedy area.
